Teamwork Skills

Don’t forget to make a Divider page!!!

Teamwork skills help develop your ability to effectively function as part of a group.

These skills include:

  • Communicating
  • Responsiveness
  • Contributing
  • Membership (leading and following)

When you think of “teamwork”, you usually think of athletic teams. This is a good example of demonstrating teamwork skills. If you have been on an athletic team, you might include:

  • Newspaper articles
  • A sporting event program
  • Certificates
  • Team or individual photographs
  • Ribbons, medals, or picture of your varsity jacket

Sports is not the only way to show you can perform well as a team member. There are many other “teams” you can be on—i.e., yearbook, Student Council, school plays, PAL Program, clubs, band, choir, debate teams, peer mediation, student-leadership organizations (DECA, VICA, HOSA, etc), etc. You want to be able to show you can work cooperatively with others and are able to contribute effectively to a group with ideas and suggestions. Participating in a team project in your classes would be good, too. Include an evaluation to show your role in the “team” project. Don’t forget about out-of-school teams too, such as a volunteer project like Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-a-Highway, Scouts, etc.

Think of the activities you’ve participated in that show teamwork, and don’t forget a “summary” for each entry. When you do a summary, make sure it has a message. For example, if you include a team football picture, don’t just put “I played on the football team.” Tell more about the skills you gained or how the experience has helped you, such as “I played on the football team for four years. Each season we pledged to be drug- and alcohol-free and attend all practices and games. I lived up to my pledge.” Doesn’t that tell more about you?

Sample Teamwork Skills Pages

If you don’t have much to put here, you may want to consider joining a group, team, or organization. Teamwork and cooperation skills are high on the “needs” list of employers. They really like to see this!!!

— DEPENDABILITY —

"I played high school soccer for 4 years. Each year, we pledged to be alcohol- and drug-free and to attend all practices and games. I lived up to my pledge."

— LEADERSHIP —

"I went to Space Camp and was elected Captain by my team."

— CROPWALK—

"A team of 20 students solicited sponsors and raised money for needy people."
